Setting Goals

One of the things I realised I did not do in my addictive days were setting goals. I was like a driftwood, aimless, no goals, no plans, no desire, no fire, no nothing. This naturally translates to lack of care for myself, for others or for what is going on around the world.

I believe that the only goal that addicts have is instant self gratification.

During the recovery period of abstinence from alcohol, I set a goal to write books. But it was a start stop process. I didn't know why I just couldn't get it going. Then I realised that there was a nagging feeling/thought inside me that says I am not capable of it. I also felt that I was not good enough. Once I saw through these negative thoughts/feelings, I gathered all the power I could find to finish what I started. So I finished two children's books which I wrote and illustrated and got them published as well!

Today, I am still setting goals for myself whether it is on the physical, psychological or spiritual levels.

My immediate physical goal is to run the half marathon race this Sunday. The training keeps me healthy and fit. I've had to adjust my goal -- last year I did the full marathon, but I realised that this year I would not have the time to train for the full 42km race so I opted for the 21km instead, which I am also very happy with.

I will be thinking happy thoughts while I run towards my goal :-)
